Welcome to the Ontario Heritage Trust's website.

Heritage is a living legacy, a legacy that helps us understand the past, gives meaning to the present and influences our future. And the Ontario Heritage Trust plays a unique role for heritage in the province.

The Trust is the only legislated heritage organization in Canada responsible for the identification, protection, renewal and promotion of Ontario’s rich and diverse built, cultural and natural heritage. It is the Government of Ontario's trustee for properties of provincial heritage interest. And it is an important adviser to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport on issues relating to heritage conservation in Ontario.

For over four decades, the Ontario Heritage Trust has been on the front lines of heritage conservation. Working with partners and individuals throughout the province, the Trust remains a centre of excellence for the delivery of services to the government and communities of Ontario for the sustainability and availability of its built, cultural and natural heritage. We are committed to celebrating the people, places and events that have influenced our past and that continue to shape our culture.

Over the next few years, the Trust’s “Engage Ontario” plan will position the heritage of the province as integral to the lives of all Ontarians. Our goals are to:

  • engage youth and diverse audience
  • actively partner with communities and governments
  • build strong brand recognition and loyalty
  • build leadership and program financial capacity
  • creatively use new information technologies and sustainability principles

The variety of heritage activities that we are engaged in year-round cannot happen without the dedication and commitment of our partners, volunteers, sponsors, students, interns, board members and professional staff. The continued growth of participation at the community level is also encouraging. There is obvious pride in the heritage of our province everywhere you look today. And the Trust – with your help – strives to tell Ontario's stories to make our past come alive.

This website focuses on our rich and varied heritage. But it also reminds us that an exciting future lies ahead when we all contribute to the preservation of Ontario's heritage treasures.

I know you will enjoy exploring this website.
