Canada 150 Winter Lecture Series: Black History in Owen Sound

Join Terri Jackson for a lecture about Owen Sound’s rich Black heritage, which dates from pre-Confederation times. While there were Blacks living in Owen Sound as early as 1843, the community began to grow in earnest in the years following the passing of the American Fugitive Slave Act. At its peak, according to the 1871 Ontario census, the Black population of Owen Sound was 10 per cent of the full population.
