Selecting a location
Once you’ve decided on a subject, identify a suitable location for the marker that is historically relevant and appropriate. Here are some guidelines:
- The site should bear a strong historical relationship to the marker subject.
- Sometimes, buildings or sites are altered – or even destroyed – over time. For example, if you are commemorating a person connected with a building that no longer exists, you can begin the marker text with “On this site …” or “Near this location …”
- Approach the current property owner(s) for the appropriate permission to install a plaque on their property before you undertake any more work on the project.
- Markers can be post-mounted or wall-mounted.
- Try to select a location that will be accessible by the largest number of people and that is well lit at night to reduce the chances of vandalism. Be sure to keep in mind that some of the people reading your marker may be in a wheelchair, so be aware of accessibility needs when identifying a suitable location for the marker.
