St. John the Evangelist Anglican Parish Hall, 175 James Street West

Year built: 1929

Builder: Unknown

Original purpose: This parish hall was part of the adjacent St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church and was constructed in 1929 to accommodate the growing Anglican congregation in town. For nearly 75 years, this hall was a bustling hub of community activity. With the decline in church attendance by early 2000, the building was closed.

Adaptive reuse: By 2013, after laying vacant for several years, the hall needed substantial attention. Purchased by Daniel and Bonita Slunder, the hall has since become a private residence that has been painstakingly transformed from an institutional space into a fully functional and innovative multi-generational family home, while retaining the character and style of the heritage building.

Awards: 2022 Paul Oberman Award for Adaptive Reuse (Architectural Conservancy Ontario) and a 2021 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation
